CHAPTER 14

Acme Ranch

Southeast of Tucson, Arizona

As the evening sun moved beyond the crest of the nearby hilltop, the growing dusk hid the transitions Karen’s facial skin tone was going through. In a matter of seconds, she’d gone from her normal tone to ghost white, finally landing on an angry red, almost resembling the same rosy cheeks and nose of a lifelong drunk. In front of her was the spot she’d woken up just two hours earlier—a random tree she’d never been to before. Next to it was a fresh mound of dirt and a large pelican case that was just dragged out of a hole by none other than Daniel Monitor.

“I was concerned when Karen hadn’t come back from storming off very angrily in this direction earlier,” Daniel explained. “What with the Chinese commandos out here sneaking around and what not. I came down here to see if she was safe and found a freshly dug spot.” He popped open the waterproof case’s hinged lid. Inside were two radios, two bottles of alcohol, several boxes of ammunition, a pistol, three knives, and an assortment of food and cash. “Is this where you came, Karen?” he asked in mock shock.

“Not cool, bro!” Pedro defended his partner.

“Easy, Peter,” Daniel said. “Sorry. Pedro,” he corrected himself. The misnomer had the desired effect of putting Karen’s ally on the emotional defensive. “We all know you two have a thing.” Pedro’s jaw nearly hit the dirt. “Which really makes me wonder why she came onto me in that cave…” He faked a new revelation coming to mind. “Ah, yeah… Granger isn’t here…”

“You’re the one who tried to touch me!” Karen screamed at nearly full volume. “Donna! You’re not—”

“Quiet!” Donna called out with authority, like a ‘mom-voice’ on steroids. She rubbed her temples with both hands as a headache started to form. “Everyone back to the garage! Now!” she yelled as she stormed up the trail. The ranch owner fumed over what she knew for sure and what she suspected on the angry march north. When they made it to the converted command post, her tone had calmed little. “Bob! Kaitlin! Go see if Claude can make it down the stairs!”

“What’s goin’ on?” Bob started, not wanting to move his ailing friend without a significant cause.

“Just do it,” Donna ordered. “Please.” She looked at Karen. “I want the truth! Who did you let come steal our cattle?” she barked.
